Abstract
Aim: Ghrelin and insulin resistance are involved in age-related metabolic disorders such as type 2 diabetes. Aiming to investigate the effect of 8 weeks of HICT exercises with olive leaf extract on insulin resistance and serum ghrelin levels in obese elderly women. Methods: In this clinical semi-experimental study, 40 obese elderly women (age: 66.26 ± 1.62 years) were randomly divided into four groups: placebo, extract group, exercise group, and extract + exercise group. The high intensity circuit training were performed for eight weeks and three sessions per week for 45 to 60 minutes. Subjects took one 125 mg capsule of olive leaf extract after lunch for eight weeks. Two days before and after the end of the interventions, to measure ghrelin, glucose, insulin, and insulin resistance, blood samples were taken from all four groups in a 12-hour fasting state. The Paired t-test was used to examine intra-group changes and analysis of covariance was used to examine differences between groups. All statistical calculations were performed using SPSS version 25 statistical software at a significant level of P<0.05.Results: There were no significant changes in the amount of ghrelin in the exercise (4.62%), extract (2%) and exercise+extract (5.24%) groups (P>0.05). A significant decrease was observed in the insulin resistance index in the exercise (14%) and exercise + extract (27.49%) groups (P<0.05). By performing covariance analysis, a Significant difference in insulin resistance index (P=0.002, F=4.26) was observed between the groups. Conclusions: This study showed that eight weeks of circuit training with olive leaf extract did not affect changes in plasma gerlin. It was also observed that circular exercises along with the consumption of olive leaf extract lead to a decrease in insulin resistance in obese elderly women.
